Large planting projects require more than just adding new plants. They demand careful preparation, clean structure, and a layout that will age well over time. This full landscape renovation on Saw Whet Blvd in Oakville focused on upgrading planting beds in the front, side, and backyard while improving drainage, symmetry, and long-term maintenance.

With a total investment of $15,000, this project delivered a cohesive, polished landscape that balances structure and softness across the entire property.

Project Overview

The scope of work was divided into three key areas:

  • Front porch and side flower beds
  • Hedge beds along the front walkway
  • Backyard planting area renovation with river rock reuse

Each area was treated as part of one unified design, ensuring consistency in materials, spacing, and finishes throughout the property.

Front Porch & Side Flower Beds

We began with a full cleanup of the flower beds by the porch and along the side of the home. The soil was tilled to loosen compacted ground, followed by the installation of premium garden soil to support healthy root development.

To control weeds and reduce long-term maintenance, heavy-duty landscape fabric was installed before planting. The planting palette included:

  • 1 four-foot Emerald Cedar
  • 20 Hydrangeas
  • 7 Sedums
  • 2 Hostas
  • 2 Standard Hydrangeas

The beds were finished with fresh mulch, creating a clean, low-maintenance appearance that frames the home beautifully.

Hedge Flower Beds Along the Walkway

Along the front walkway, existing grass was removed to make room for structured hedge beds. After soil preparation and clean edging, we planted 42 Hill Yews, evenly spaced to form a dense, symmetrical hedge line.

Landscape cloth was installed throughout the beds, followed by mulch to maintain visual consistency and suppress weed growth. The result is a crisp, formal look that defines the walkway and enhances curb appeal.

Backyard Planting Area Renovation

In the backyard, the focus was on renovating an existing river rock planting area while improving soil quality and layout. All existing river rock was carefully removed and set aside for reuse. Old landscape fabric, wooden edging, mulch, and debris were removed and disposed of.

After a full cleanup, the soil was tilled and amended to improve structure, drainage, and nutrient content. New premium soil was added to raise bed levels and support healthy plant growth. Heavy-duty landscape fabric was installed, followed by the planting of:

  • 14 Standard Hydrangeas

  • 14 four-foot Emerald Cedars

Once planting was complete, the existing river rock was reinstalled over the new fabric and topped up where needed to ensure full coverage and a smooth, level finish.

Designed for Longevity

This Oakville landscape renovation was built with durability and long-term performance in mind. Proper soil preparation, consistent materials, and structured planting layouts ensure the landscape will continue to mature evenly with minimal maintenance issues.
